Description
A road-side barn found in Alabama advertises “35 Miles to Beautiful Rock City”.
Rock City Gardens in Chattanooga, Tennessee, opened in 1932 featuring unique rock formations and panoramic views from atop Lookout Mountain. Garnet Carter and his wife, Frieda, looking for a way to advertise their newest venture, came up with the “See Rock City” painted barn campaign. At its peak, somewhere around 900 barn roofs and walls in 19 states were decorated with different variations of this slogan. It was surprisingly effective. When the interstates came along, and travelers began bypassing the back roads, Rock City started to maintain fewer of these signs, leaving them to fade and the barns to slowly rot away. Today, these nostalgic landmarks are rapidly disappearing, with fewer than 100 of them left.
