Artist's Description

There is a pretty clear dividing line on the beach between where the Least Tern and the Black Skimmer each have their nesting areas. The smooth sand belongs to the Least Terns, and the messy rougher area of beach belongs to the Black Skimmers. As long as each stays in their section, they pretty well ignore each other.

Today, we have a confrontation; this Least Tern is not happy the Black Skimmer is sitting right on the line. The Least Tern zoomed over his head and squawked for at least 30 minutes before taking a break and starting all over again. See the three white spots on the Skimmers back, yes, the Tern pooped on him. That's the first thing Terns do when they feel threatened or aren't happy with you.

Terns are persistent, aggressive little birds, and Skimmers must be extremely stubborn because she was not about to move.

Image captured at the Gulfport Beach Least Tern Breeding Area, Gulfport, Mississippi.

I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change. My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
