Description
A Confederate cannon points towards the Tennessee River to block off shipping to the city of Chattanooga.
Point Park, part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park is located on Lookout Mountain in Chattanooga, Tennessee. This memorial park overlooks the Lookout Mountain Battlefield and the city of Chattanooga.
After the Confederate’s victory at Chickamauga, they pursued the Union Army to Chattanooga. As the Union troops made preparations to defend the city, the Confederates encircled the city and prepared to lay siege. Confederate troops perched atop Lookout Mountain for two months, observing the Union Army below. Finally, Union troops under the command of General Joseph Hooker swept the northern slopes of Lookout Mountain in the battle often called “The Battle above the Clouds”
For the rest of the Civil War, this was a tourist destination for the Union soldiers and civilians. A photographer even established a studio on the mountain to capture portraits of soldiers on the point.
