Description
Looking down into the gorge at Guadalupe Mountains National Park.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in western Texas, just south of the New Mexico state line, and not far from Carlsbad, New Mexico. The Guadalupe Mountains are part of a rare, mostly buried 400-mile long fossilized reef that is considered one of the world's finest examples of an ancient reef system. This mountain range towers more than 3,000 feet above the arid Chihuahuan Desert that surrounds it. At 1000 feet high, the limestone cliff, El Capitan, is the park’s most striking feature and Guadalupe Peak, at 8,751 feet above sea level, is the highest point in Texas.
