This is a close-up of the Halemaumau Crater at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. On the day that I shot this, the lava lake…the largest lava lake in the world, by the way…was 135 feet below the crater rim. Look closely right at the center front of the rim; see those 3 little brighter blips, that’s the very tip of a 135 foot tall lava splash, Pele must be telling me not to be so nosy!

I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath.
