Description
This image is number four of a five image sequence of a Sandhill Crane taking off from a field at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.
It isn’t easy for a bird this size to get off the ground.
1. The Crane throws its neck forward, demonstrating intent to fly. He will sometimes hold this pose for a second or more, so when you see it, pay attention.
2. As he steps into it, the wings go up.
3. This was a calm day, so the Sandhill Crane was able to dip lower and then leap. On a windy day, he would be running with wings spread to catch the air, much like a plane barreling down the runway.
4. Wings up and fully extended as he jumps.
5. We have take off.
