Artist's Description

A horse nibbles on the grass at Sun Ranch, with the legendary Devil's Gate, a historic Wyoming beacon for pioneers, in the background.

Devil's Gate, a remarkable geological formation on the Oregon/California/Mormon Trail, is five miles southwest of Independence Rock. It was a day's journey for the pioneers during the westward expansion. This natural wonder is a narrow passage through granite rocks carved by the Sweetwater River, with a depth of 370 feet and a length of 1,500 feet. Its base is astonishingly slim, measuring 30 feet, but it widens to almost 300 feet at its summit. The geological history of this area is equally fascinating, with evidence of it being filled with mountain sediment and volcanic ash millions of years ago. The river's persistent erosion of the rock and surrounding sediment over time has resulted in the formation we now know as Devil's Gate.

I'm a travel photographer that enjoys photographing United States architecture, nature, and transportation. As the 8th photographer in 4 generations of my family, I don't remember a time when photography was not part of my life. By the time I was five years old, I was standing on a stool in the darkroom, helping my dad develop pictures. It was my job to transfer the photos from the hypo to the water bath. I went to college for interior design. After I graduated, I had a long successful career as an art buyer and designer for a large home furnishings company. In 2006, I had a significant life change.
