Artist's Description
Renard the Fox sits at the corner of the Anheuser Busch Bevo Bottling Building in St. Louis, Missouri.
In 1916, when the military was the first to ban alcohol, Anheuser-Busch introduced Bevo, its nonalcoholic near-beer, placing the brewery in a perfect position to ramp up production when Prohibition rolled around in 1919.
Anheuser Busch chose “Renard the Fox” from a popular children’s fairy tale as the mascot for the nonalcoholic flavored beer. Reynard was sly and witty, and so was Anheuser Busch since Bevo sold 5 million cases a year, keeping them in business through Prohibition.
Renard the Fox was carved at all four corners of the bottling building with food and drink in his hand since he knows great places to find food, especially drinks. Renard is dressed in traditional Lederhosen as a nod to the Anheuser-Busch family’s German heritage.
