Description
Christ Church is a National Historic Landmark in the unincorporated community of Church Hill, Mississippi. Dating from the 1790’s, this is the oldest Episcopal congregation in the state. The church seen today was complete in 1857-58 and is the third Christ Church to be built here.
Designed for a community of wealthy cotton planters by an obscure Natchez architect/lawyer J. Edward Smith, the church was modeled after the old country churches found in England and is considered to be the purest expression of Gothic Revival architecture in antebellum Mississippi.
Sometimes also referred to as Maryland Settlement, the area of Church Hill is remarkable because its antebellum buildings are mostly intact and very few modern buildings have been built here. Christ Church is located just north of Natchez and is part of the Church Hill Loop just off the Natchez Trace Parkway.
