Description
Bourbon barrels are heavy. An empty 53-gallon oak barrel weights on average about 110 pounds. and once it is filled 520 pounds.
Nothing high tech here, older distilleries like Woodford Reserve used a gravity-powered barrel run to move barrels from the barreling porch to the rickhouse making it easy for a single person to transfer barrels from one location to the other.
As simple as it sounds to roll a barrel down a track, it’s considered an art form. If a barrel rolls into the ricks bung-down, it will likely leak. The position of the barrel is premeditated- even before it is placed in the rick, and the final position has been determined. If you know it takes x revolutions of a standard-sized barrel to make it to the next position; you know where you need to position the bung for it to end up where it belongs in the end.
