Description
The historic Beaver Creek Bridge arches gracefully over the rugged and untamed wilderness, connecting two towering rocky outcroppings at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota.
This 225-foot-long deck arch bridge, made of concrete and steel, stands 115 feet above the canyon floor and spans one of the park’s two perennial streams. Constructed in 1929 to connect Wind Cave National Park to Custer State Park, it was a notable achievement in engineering as the builders skillfully integrated the arches with the natural rock formations on either side of the canyon. This unique bridge holds historical significance as it is the only one of its kind in South Dakota and ranks among the top three most significant bridges in the Rocky Mountain region of the National Park System. Its construction was made possible through the efforts of Peter Norbeck, a U.S. Senator from South Dakota who played a key role in developing Custer State Park and scenic highways in the Black Hills.
