Description
The Big Texan Cowboy sign advertises Home of the FREE 72-ounce Steak.
A Route 66 icon, The Big Texan Steak Ranch, first opened on East Amarillo Boulevard in Amarillo, Texas, in 1960. After I-40 was completed, they moved out to the interstate in 1970. The Big Texan cowboy sign was at the first Big Texan location and moved too.
72- ounces -- that’s 4.5 pounds of beef! Your meal is free as long as you eat the steak and all the fixings within an hour. The entire meal consists of the steak, a bread roll with butter, a baked potato, a shrimp cocktail, and a salad. Don’t worry; they start a timer on the wall when they deliver your meal. So, you’ll know when your hour is up. You lose, and it’s $72.
I was so disappointed that no one was up for the challenge while I was there. My husband laughed at me when I suggested that he try and replied, “Give me a week instead of an hour, and I might get it all down!”
