Description
I wasn't expecting much after researching Black Rock Hill at milepost 79.9 along the Blue Ridge Parkway. I read how the view was overgrown with trees and about how in the winter, when the trees are bare, you can see that the mountain in the background is black. The mountain is made of diorite, a rock that ranges in color from granite to black. Another website talked about a swamp-like area called the “Mash” that is visible from this spot.
Imagine my surprise when I pull up to this...
It sure was a WOW moment! Rhododendrons are blooming as far as the eye can see. Apparently, you need to visit this spot in June or July to appreciate the beauty of Black Rock Hill and its field of rhododendrons.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is 469 miles long. It starts on the northern end at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and ends in the south at Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Cherokee, North Carolina side.
