Description
Located inside the breathtaking Shoshone Canyon near Cody, Wyoming, lies the Buffalo Bill Dam. This impressive structure is named after the legendary Wild West icon William Buffalo Bill Cody, who established the nearby town of Cody. Initially called Shoshone Dam when it was constructed, it was renamed in 1946 to honor Cody.
Upon its completion in 1910, this concrete arch-gravity dam was the tallest in the world, at 325 feet tall. In 1992, modifications were made to raise the dam's crest by 25 feet, thereby increasing its reservoir capacity by 260,000 acre-feet.
Recognized for its historical significance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1973. The surrounding area is now known as Buffalo Bill State Park.
