Description
I traveled to Texas to shoot Route 66, and as luck would have it, we had a wind storm. After making the long drive, I wasn't about to spend my weekend hunkered down in a motel room like a sane person, so I was out shooting in it. In the more rural areas, the 50+ mile an hour wind gusts stirred up the dirt, and made for interesting atmospheric conditions. I honestly never expected these images to see the light of day but it ends up that gritty dirt-filled skies are the perfect backdrop for the level of decay at the Bug Ranch.
The Crutchfield's ran a gas station and trading post along the Route 66 / I-40 frontage road in Conway, Texas, for 35 years. Business was good until the Loves Truck Stop opened on the other side of the interstate in 2002, and they couldn't compete. So, hoping to draw traffic to their business by becoming a Route 66 roadside attraction, they decided to parody the Cadillac Ranch by burying five VW Beetles' noses down in the dirt. The business only lasted another year, but the Bug Ranch lives on as a popular Route 66 stop. Just like the Cadillac Ranch, these VW bugs are covered in graffiti.
