Description
The Bunkhouse on the ML Ranch.
Ranch hands slept in double bunks above a dirt floor. After his wife died, Mr. Lovell preferred the bunkhouse to the main house, and he used the west cabin for both his office and living quarters. While he shared the same building, he enjoyed the luxury of a brass bed and rocking chair.
The historic Mason-Lovell Ranch is one of the four ghost ranches that dot the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area on the Wyoming/Montana border. This ranch, which operated from 1883-1902 and housed a staggering 25,000 head of cattle, was one of the largest cattle ranches in Wyoming Territory in its day, a living testament to the region's rich history. Located in the Wyoming section of the recreation area, the nearest town, Lovell, Wyoming, was named in honor of Henry Clay Lovell, a man who left an indelible mark on the area.
