Artist's Description

The historic Cable Mill in the Cades Cove area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park sits in its original location within the park. John Cable built the water-powered grist mill and sawmill in about 1870. The same wheel was used to power both mills. John’s son, James, inherited the mill and continued to operate it well into the 20th century, only closing when the sash sawmill could no longer compete with the more modern steam-powered mills.
