Description
The historic Capilla (Chapel) de Santa Rita de Cascia, located in the small village of Bernal, New Mexico, sits at the base of Starvation Peak. The church continues to serve the community today.
This historic church dates from 1916 and is just off the Santa Fe Trail and the 1926-1937 alignment of Route 66, known as the Santa Fe Loop.
Today, Bernal is a sleepy little village with one store, this church and a handful of houses, but it was a busy town during the Santa Fe Trail days. Starvation Peak's 7,031-foot tall butte was a well-known landmark for travelers along the Santa Fe Trail, with a stage stop and campsite being located at its base.
Despite the Santa Fe Trail's traffic in the early years, the town never had a chance to grow very large. When the Santa Fe Railroad came through in the 1880s, they ran tracks and built a train station 1.5 miles east of Bernal, just far enough away that another town grew up around it, and although Route 66 came through in 1926, it was rerouted just 11 years later.
