Artist's Description

The entrance to Carillon Park in downtown Centralia, Illinois, the park has a musical fountain and a bell tower.

The Carillon towers 165 feet above the city and is the sixth largest bell tower in the world. It contains 65 bells all cast by Paccard Fonderie de Cloches in Annecy, France, in 1982 and 1983. The largest bell at 79.5 inches in diameter, pitched G, weighs 11,000 pounds, while the smallest bell, pitched C, weighs 20 pounds, and is just 8 inches in diameter. The total bell weight is 61,312 pounds making it one of the heaviest instruments in the world.

A professional carillonneur must climb the 173 steps to play the bells.
