Description
The Chapel of the Cross is a historic Episcopal church located in Madison, Mississippi. Circa 1850–52, it is noted for its Gothic Revival architecture, which draws heavily from 14th-century English country churches, it is complete with a pointed arch front doorway and sharply tipped windows.
On the grounds that were once the Annandale Plantation, the church was the house of worship for the Johnstone family. The Johnstone’s moved to Madison County, Mississippi in 1819 and were said to be descended from the Johnstone’s that once held the title of Earl of Annandale and Hartfell in Scotland.
Sadly, John Johnstone died in 1848 never fulfilling his dream of having the chapel constructed. His widow, Margaret Johnstone, had it built in his memory.
It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
