The historic Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel was once known as Terminal Station. Designed by Donn Barber, and opened in 1909, this Beaux-Arts styled station cost $1.5 million to build. With its arched main entrance, 82-foot high ceiling with a domed skylight in the center, it was the grandest building in Chattanooga. At the time, the arched main entrance was said to be the largest arch in the world! Terminal Station had 14 train tracks that could serve seven different passenger platforms.
This was the first train station in the South to help connect the North to the South. On March 5, 1880, the first passenger train leaving Cincinnati for Chattanooga was nicknamed the “Chattanooga Choo Choo.” This historic occasion opened the first major link in public transportation between the North and the South. The Choo Choo was operated by the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, America’s first municipal railway system.
