Description
One of the fantastic views of the Sierra Landrons on the drive out to the ghost town of Riley, New Mexico. The town was formerly known as Santa Rita, and the locals still call it that.
Riley is very isolated. It is a 20-mile drive from Magdalena, New Mexico, on a 4WD dirt Forest Road through the Cibola National Forest and Grasslands. By New Mexican standards, the road might be considered 2WD acceptable until you get to the spot where you cross the Rio Salada. When we visited, it had been a dry winter, and although the road was rough in some areas, it looked to be recently graded by the foresty service.
It was one of the best ghost towns I visited in New Mexico, but getting there was half the fun.
