Description
Seen here at night, the City Market building is the centerpiece of Roanoke Virginia’s historic City Market District. This building is the core around which there are permanent tables covered by awnings for the farmers market stands to set up. Since 1882, it has been open year around, making it the oldest continuously operating open air market in Virginia.
This building was built in 1922 after the original market building was destroyed by fire. In the mid-1980s the indoor market area was renovated into a food court. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
