Description
In 1902, Frank Lloyd Wright, known for his Prairie School movement of "organic architecture," was commissioned by Susan Lawerence Dana, a Springfield, Illinois, socialite, to "remodel" her deceased father's home. It was the 72nd building to be designed by Wright and his first-ever "blank check" commission.
The home is 12,000 square feet and has 35 rooms on three floors with 16 varying levels. The house contains the largest collection of site-specific Wright designed art glass and furniture of any Wright home. When completed, Frank Lloyd Wright proclaimed the home "a house to rest the soul."
The Dana Thomas House is one of Wright's masterworks of his early period. In its day, it was the showplace of Springfield, and today it remains one of the most important examples of early 20th-century architecture. The home, purchased by the state of Illinois in 1981, is on the National Register of Historic Places, a National Historic Landmark, and an Illinois State Historic site.
