Description
A group of Sandhill Cranes dance in a cornfield during the annual Sandhill Crane migration in central Nebraska.
Dancing is emblematic of cranes. It establishes social relationships, announces territorial claims, cements pair bonding and teaches the young. Sometimes it is just for fun, but it usually reflects an emotional state since it draws attention and is energy expensive.
Their dance includes head bobbing, bowing, arching, jumping, wing flapping, running, and twig tossing. The cranes leap into the air, kick up their feet, and turn in the air like a tour jete in ballet. They also do minuets as they rotate gracefully with extended wings.
