Description
Dr. W. D. Hutchings Office and Hospital is one of the historic buildings in the Madison, Indiana, Historic District. Circa 1846-48, this building is the finest local example of a conservatively designed Greek Revival office building.
Before becoming a doctor’s office, for its first 20 years of use, the building was the law office of Michael Bright, a well-known attorney and political figure of the time. It was then the office of Judge John Cravens from 1871-1882.
Today a museum, Dr. Hutchings, practiced medicine here from 1882-1903. The downstairs was his waiting room and surgery, while the upstairs held two patient rooms. After his death, the Hutchings family held onto the office contents and building for half a century before finally donating it to the city.
The Historic District was first listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and later expanded. Madison’s National Historic Landmark District now includes over 1800 buildings in approximately 133 blocks, making it the largest contiguous Historic District in the United States.
