When we arrived to visit the eaglets on June 9th, the oldest eaglet was perched on the edge of the nest. The baby was down in the nest but right beside him taking everything in. Mom was being very talkative.
We were slow to catch on but finally decided that Mom was holding class and giving commands almost like a Drill Sargent.
The first part of class was how to perch properly like an adult eagle and how to stay alert and scan for danger. This little exercise was going on before we arrived and continued for at least an hour. I never thought I’d be bored watching eagles but this was a little like watching paint dry.
The second part of class was a lesson in gliding and diving. It was a breezy day and the eaglet stood facing into the wind. He didn’t flap his wings; instead he slowly stretched them out and left them there making subtle adjustments as the wind changed. He then squatted and tucked his wings as if going into a fast dive.
