Description
The Santuario de Nuestro Señor de Esquipulas, more commonly known as El Santuario de Chimayo, is internationally known as the most important Catholic pilgrimage center in the United States. The shrine has earned a reputation as a healing site, with many claims that the dirt from the church's backroom can heal physical and spiritual ills. Sometimes called Lourdes of America, over 300,000 people visit Chimayo every year.
Located on the High Road to Taos, the small shrine constructed in 1816 is one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in New Mexico. The sanctuary was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1970.
