Description
The magnificent Entrada Sandstone Cliffs from the Continental Divide along historic Route 66 in New Mexico.
At an elevation of 7,295 feet, the Continental Divide is the highest point along New Mexico Route 66. There’s not a lot here, except a few trading posts, an old Whiting Brothers Hotel, and the magnificent view of the red Entrada Sandstone cliffs.
It’s worth the time to pull off for the great elevated view of the cliffs from behind the trading posts. The Entrada sandstone cliffs first make their appearance around Prewitt, about 16 miles before reaching the Continental Divide, part of the Colorado Plateau, the last of the four land formations you will see in New Mexico. These spectacular cliffs will continue as you exit the New Mexico stretch of Route 66.
