Description
Looking down at the Buffalo Bill power plant just downstream from the picturesque Shoshone Canyon along the Shoshone River in Cody, Wyoming.
The increasing demand for scarce water resources in the West is becoming a significant issue. Addressing this requires water conservation and innovative techniques to meet new needs while maintaining current usage levels. Initially, the Buffalo Bill Dam was built for irrigation purposes. The Shoshone power plant, which can be seen below the dam, was completed in 1922 and added hydropower capabilities. Hydroelectric power was further expanded with the addition of the Heart Mountain powerplant in 1948.
In 1992, modifications to the Buffalo Bill Dam and Reservoir included raising the dam by 25 feet and constructing the Buffalo Bill and Spirit Mountain power plants seen here across the river. Additionally, these modifications involved upgrading the Shoshone powerplant.
Today, the reservoir supports a wide range of activities, including irrigation, municipal and industrial use, recreation, benefits for fish and wildlife, hydroelectric power generation, and environmental quality control.
