Description
Fish Car No. 3, a replica fish railcar, is displayed at the D.C. Booth Historic National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, South Dakota.
Today, the US Fish and Wildlife Service moves over 200 million fish in refrigerated, oxygen-aerated tanker trucks. But back in 1871, when the US Fish Commission started, there weren't many ways to transport fish. Fish cars on trains were the best option. By the early 1920s, these cars had moved 72 million fish over more than 2 million miles. By 1940, thanks to the highway system, fish cars weren't needed anymore.
Sadly, none of the original ten cars that carried trout through the Black Hills remain.
