Description
Every spring the Great Blue Herons return to Devil's Lake State Park in Baraboo, Wisconsin, to breed and raise their young at the Rookery. The males typically arrive back at the nesting area first so they can court the females as they arrive. It is the male's job to collect the nesting materials and sticks so the females can spruce up one of the old nests in preparation for her eggs. Once the nest is finished, the female will lay 3 to 5 eggs which will take about a month to hatch. Both mom and dad will care of the young until they are able to fly 60 to 90 days later.
It is now late June, the few remaining young are getting their last minute flying lessons. All the Great Blue Herons will soon be leaving the rookery for the season. It is quite noisy with lots of squawking and flapping of wings.
In this image, one of the adult Blue Herons is demonstrating how to fly. Standing at the top of a pine tree and facing the nest she repeatedly beats her wings up and down but never flies off. You can just see the very tips of her baby's wings as he stands in the nest and mimics her movements.
