Description
A view across the rebuilt 1886 wooden truss bridge and the old Shenandoah Canal from Virginius Island in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
Founded by George Washington and used from 1785-1802, the Potowmack Canal system predates the C&O Canal by 30 years. This series of skirting canals were used by cargo boats to bypass the waterfalls along the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers improving trade from DC to Harpers Ferry and the western frontier. The Shenandoah Canal was added to expand trade into the valley.
In 1803, no longer in use, workman widened and deepened the channel with hand tools. The canal became part of the water power system for Harpers Ferry’s Virginius Island industrial area.
