Description
Footer's Dye Works Building is a historic landmark in Cumberland, Maryland. It is historically significant because it represents an example of factory architecture in an industry that fueled an economic boom in Cumberland.
The Footer's Steam and Dye Works was founded in 1870 by Thomas Footer, an immigrant from England. This building, which is the only one remaining from a huge company complex constructed in 1906, carried out industrial-scale cleaning and dyeing. Advertising on the side of the building “America’s Greatest Cleaning and Dyeing Works.” There were said to be 500 employees at the companies peak, with the White House being one of its clients. In 1936, thanks to the depression and a new “dry” cleaning process that had begun to replace steam cleaning, the company went bankrupt.
Today the building has been renovated into residential lofts with commercial spaces at ground level.
