Description
Abraham Lincoln stands atop a platform inscribed with the Gettysburg Address in front of the Gettysburg Library in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The life-sized statue was dedicated on Remembrance Day, November 23, 2013, as part of activities commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lincoln delivering the Gettysburg Address.
Once known as the Federal Building, the building was constructed in the Federal architectural style in 1913. When built, it housed the War Department/National Park Service headquarters for Gettysburg National Military Park, offices of the IRS, and the United States Post Office. Since 1992, it has been the home of the main branch of the Adams County Library.
In 1955, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower was at home on his Gettysburg farm recuperating from a heart attack. He maintained an office in the Federal building so that he could be photographed going to and from work to ensure the public he was well and still on the job.
