Description
Constructed in the early 1940s, the Church of the Abiding Presence, located on the grounds of the United Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, had its dedication service in 1942.
The church sits on Seminary Ridge, the former Confederate Avenue. It is the first building on campus to be constructed facing west instead of east like the older structures. The Seminary existed before the government built a road at the top of the ridge behind its original buildings.
The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, founded in 1826, was in operation for 189 years before it merged with the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia in 2017. Before the merger, it was the oldest continuing Lutheran Seminary in the United States. The Seminary still uses both campuses.
