Description
Abraham Lincoln points to the Wills House, explaining to a modern-day tourist that the red brick home of David Wills is where he put the finishing touches on his Gettysburg Address and spent the night before delivering it at the Soldiers’ National Cemetery dedication.
The United States has David Wills to thank for creating our first National Cemetery. David Wills was one of Pennsylvania’s most prominent attorneys before the Civil War. Shortly after the battle at Gettysburg, he purchased the western half of Cemetery Hill to ensure that the Union soldiers that died there would receive a proper burial and be remembered. He was also responsible for inviting Abraham Lincoln to speak at its dedication and stay in his home the night before delivering the Gettysburg Address.
Today, his home is a museum and part of the Gettysburg Battlefield National Historic District. It features six galleries and has two rooms that have been restored to 1863 condition.
