Description
The Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial is seen across the tops of Civil War tombstones at Soldiers' National Cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The Friend to Friend Memorial tells the story of personal friends and Masonic Fraternity brothers Union General Winfield Scott Hancock and Confederate General Lewis Addison Armistead, who served in the US Army together before the Civil War. Armistead refused to fight against his fellow Southerners, so he joined the Confederate Army.
The two friends met at Gettysburg during Pickett’s Charge, where Armistead led his men through Hancock’s line. Unfortunately, while both were wounded during this engagement, Armistead sustained mortal injuries.
The sculpture depicts Hancock’s staff assistant Union Captain Henry Bingham, collecting Armistead’s watch and personal effects to be given to his friend to ensure they were returned to his family.
Armistead died at Gettysburg on July 5, 1863. Captain Bigham went on to attain the rank of General. He served 32 years in the United States House of Representatives and was known as the “Father of the House.”
