Description
Civil War soldiers’ graves on the hillside in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The three-day-long Battle of Gettysburg was fought July 1 - 3, 1863. It was the largest battle of the American Civil War and resulted in the most casualties of any Civil War battle. It is also considered the war’s turning point, which led to the Union’s victory.
The cemetery, named initially Soldiers’ National Cemetery, contains 3,512 interments from the Civil War of which 979 are unknowns. There are also sections for veterans of the Spanish-American War, World War I, and all the subsequent wars, as well as graves of the veteran’s spouses and children, bringing the interment count up to over 6000.
This is where Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address when the cemetery was consecrated on November 19, 1863. Known as “Remembrance Day,” at Gettysburg National Cemetery is observed annually with a procession and memorial ceremonies by thousands of Civil War reenactment troops.
