Description
A Civil War cannon sits before the old Gettysburg Armory at Gettysburg National Military Park in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
The former Gettysburg National Guard Armory on Seminary Ridge was constructed in the Art Deco style in 1938. A Public Works project, this building housed the garage and repair shop for military vehicles and held administrative space, classrooms, and a drill hall. However, it was never used as just an armory but also a building for sporting events and community meetings.
During World War II, in 1944, the Armory was temporarily used as a German POW camp, while the official Prisoner of War camp was constructed on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Later on, the building was designated as a public fallout shelter.
In 2010, Battery B, 1/108th Field Artillery, moved to a new building on South Mountain, and the building was transferred to the private sector in 2013. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1990.
