Description
Circa 1820, the brick Colonial Inn at Lincoln Square is one of the oldest buildings remaining on the historic Square in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Before becoming an Inn, it was the home of the Danner family and the first Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA).
Joel and Juliet Danner purchased the home in 1834. They had ten children, three of whom died in infancy, that they raised here.
Joel was considered a prominent businessman in Gettysburg and lived an active life of service. He and his business partner were carriage builders, owned a hardware store, and did silver plating. He was also involved in politics and an ardent Republican, serving as Prothonotary and Clerk of the Courts before being elected to Congress.
Joel helped organize the Pennsylvania Emergency Militia troops. During and after the battle at Gettysburg, the Danner family took part in relief efforts and helping wounded soldiers.
After the Civil War ended, Danner became one of the presidents of the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association and served as Treasure of the Good Samaritan Lodge #336.
Danner passed away in 1885, but the home stayed in the family until the last Danner child died in 1925. Then, she donated it to the YWCA.
The home reopened as the Young Women’s Christian Association in 1926. It hosted many women’s clubs and had a public “waiting room” offering respite for anyone who needed a place to go. It was also the only public library in Adams County before the larger library opened in 1945. In 1989, the YWCA moved to a new facility and sold the building, which is now an inn.
The Inn at Lincoln Square is part of the Gettysburg Battlefield National Historic District.
