Description
Flowering New Jersey Tea (ceanothus americanus) frames the late spring view from the Great Valley Overlook.
The Great Valley stretches through the Appalachians from New York to Alabama. Known as the Great Warrior Path, it was the route for trade and travel for the Iroquois and Cherokee and also the migration path of the Scotch-Irish and German’s that migrated from Pennsylvania to the valley to settle from 1730-50.
The Great Valley Overlook is located at milepost 99.6 on the Virginia section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Here the Great Valley is confined by the Alleghenies to the west and the Blue Ridge to the east.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is 469 miles long. It starts on the northern end at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and ends in the south at Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the Cherokee, North Carolina side.
