Artist's Description

A happy Gold Dust Day Gecko resting atop a Torch Ginger flower.

The Hawaiian word for lizard, gecko, serpent or reptile of any kind is mo’o (pronounced mow oh). The Gold Dust Day gecko is known as green mo’o. Mo’o are mentioned in many Polynesian stories and myths and some are considered guardians or mythological dragon like creatures.

The Gold Dust Day Gecko is a relatively new arrival to the Hawaiian Islands. Active primarily during the day, this gecko is native to Madagascar and small islands off the coast of East Africa. They were illegally smuggled in and released; in fact, the entire Hawaiian population stems from only eight lizards that a University of Hawaiʻi student released near the Mānoa campus in 1974.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
