Description
Happy Retreat was the home of Charles Washington, the younger brother of George Washington and the founder of the city of Charles Town, West Virginia. It was built on land that Charles inherited from his older half-brother, Lawrence Washington.
In 1790, when he and his wife, Mildred, moved to Happy Retreat, Charles had built the two wings, but the center section of the home was just a breezeway. The house was finally completed in 1837 when Judge Isaac Douglas purchased it.
Charles and Mildred Washington are buried on the property.
Happy Retreat is part of the Washington Heritage Trail.
