Description
Hofmann Tower is located in the village of Lyons, Illinois, just 12 miles outside of Chicago, named after local brewer George Hofmann Jr, who commissioned the tower and a dam in 1908.
The building was the centerpiece for a park and riverfront recreation area on the Des Plaines River. The dam created a space deep enough for boating and provided power for the street lamps throughout the park and the tower. The eight-story structure is said to be adapted from a bridge tower Hofmann saw while visiting Germany and that it was the first building in town to have electricity. When it was completed, it was the tallest building in Illinois, west of downtown Chicago.
Hofmann Tower is both a village and state landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
