Artist's Description

A close up study of the beautiful wrought iron front gate to Hulihe’e Palace. In the very center is the Hawaii royal crest with the state motto, “Ua Mau ke Ea o ka ʻĀina i ka Pono” below. Roughly translated it means, “The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.”

Hulihe‘e Palace is located in historic Kailua-Kona, Hawai‘i, on Ali‘i Drive. Once a summer vacation home for Hawaiian royalty, today Hulihe‘e Palace is a museum showcasing Victorian artifacts from the era of King Kalākaua and Queen Kapi‘olani.

The palace was originally built by High Chief, John Adams Kuakini, Governor of the island of Hawai‘i during the Kingdom of Hawai‘i, out of lava rock. Hulihe‘e Palace was added to the National Register of Historic Places listings on the island of Hawai‘i in 1973.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
