Description
Located in Utica, Illinois, this stone building is the only surviving canal warehouse that sits directly on the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Today it is the La Salle County Historical Museum.
The I & M Canal was completed in 1848, and this warehouse was constructed a year later by Utica resident James Clark. Clark operated a general store out of the warehouse and, in 1877 shipped 210, 000 bushels of corn and 22,000 bushels of oats.
The I & M Canal was the main commercial artery between Chicago and LaSalle, helping to establish Chicago as an important grain market.
