Description
The 1926-1930 alignment of Route 66 went straight down Capitol Avenue in Springfield, Illinois ensuring you receive the perfect view of this stunning piece of architecture, the Illinois State Capitol.
The structure is topped with a 405-foot dome covered in zinc to give it a silver finish that doesn’t weather.
Designed in the Renaissance Revival/Second Empire style by architecture firm Cochrane and Garnsey of Chicago, construction began on the building in 1869, and it took twenty years to complete for a final cost of $4,500,000.
The building is the sixth one to serve as the Illinois State Capitol building since Illinois became a state in 1818. They held their first legislative session in the building in 1877 before it was finished since Illinois outgrew the Old State Capitol building, located just a short distance away.
It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
