Artist's Description
This stunning piece of architecture is the Illinois State Capitol building in Springfield, Illinois. The structure is topped with a 405-foot dome covered in zinc to give it a silver finish that doesn’t weather.
Designed in the Renaissance Revival/Second Empire style by architecture firm Cochrane and Garnsey of Chicago, construction began on the building in 1869, and it took twenty years to complete for a final cost of $4,500,000.
The building is the sixth one to serve as the Illinois State Capitol building since Illinois became a state in 1818. They held their first legislative session in the building in 1877 before it was finished since Illinois outgrew the Old State Capitol building, located just a short distance away.
It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

My husband became a medical traveler, and I decided to put my career on hold to tag along. In the process, I found my roots again. What...
