Description
Located inside Independence Hall, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court chamber holds immense historical significance as the meeting place of the colony’s and later the state's highest court. The chamber served as a central location for the colonial government to debate and make decisions on legal matters and continued to do so after Pennsylvania became a state in 1787.
In addition to its importance in Pennsylvania history, the Supreme Court chamber played a crucial role in shaping American jurisprudence. In 1791, just four years after it was established, the U.S. Supreme Court used the Pennsylvania chamber for one session until their courtroom in what is now Old City Hall was completed.
